First winter canola variety adapted to the Great Plains.
- Foundation and certified seed for a fall 1999 planting.
- Wichita has shown a significant improvement in winter hardiness over previously released cultivars.
- Plants can grow 60 inches tall and average total oil content of the seed is 37%.
- Commercially grown in over 12 states.
- Better than average resistance to shattering and lodging.
- Has good heat stress with excellent cold tolerance.

Conventional Canola Winter Varieties
'Abilene
- Released in 2002.
- Very similar to Wichita.
- Ripens 1 to 2 days later than Wichita.
- Slightly taller than Wichita
- Flowers a day or two later than Wichita.
- Has good heat stress with excellent cold tolerance.
- Resistance to Blackleg disease.
'Sumner'
- Released in 2003.
- Tolerant to carryover SU herbicides.
- Approximately three days earlier to flower and harvest than Wichita.
- Tends to yield approx. 150 lbs/A less than Wichita
- Good choice if SU herbicides applied the previous fall or spring.
- Resistance to Blackleg disease.
'KS7436'
- Not yet named.
- Scheduled for release in 2004 or 2005.
- Similar to Wichita .
- Has demonstrated a 185 lb/A yield increase compared to Wichita.
- Approx. 2.5" taller than Wichita .
- Seed oil content of 1% greater than Wichita.
- Seed should be available for commercial production in fall of 2005.

- DKW13-86 - Spring initiation of bolting and flowering is equal to Sumner and Wichita.
- DKW13-62 - Spring initiation of bolting and flowering is 4 to 8 days later than Sumner and Wichita.
